The beginnings of the DMV Baptist Church

The DMV Baptist Church: Driven by the Master’s Voice

named this ministry The DMV Baptist Church because it was at the DMV in Jacksonville, North Carolina, that I first began preaching regularly.

A few months after recognizing God’s call on my life to preach, I had the opportunity to preach at a few churches, including my home church of 25 years. Then, in April 2003, I had to renew my commercial driver’s license (CDL). My appointment was scheduled for a Monday morning in Jacksonville, North Carolina.

As I waited for the DMV to open, I found myself among approximately 20 other people in line. It was during that ordinary Monday morning that I heard a still, small voice speaking to my spirit: “Get out and preach to those people.”

I have rarely heard God’s still, small voice so clearly. The first time was when I was saved. The second time was at Exit 323 on Interstate 81 in Virginia, where God told me He was going to take me off the road as an over-the-road truck driver. There have been other occasions when I have heard His voice, and each time, I have had to make a choice to surrender to His will, whether or not to be “Driven by the Master’s Voice.”

That faithful morning at the DMV was another one of those moments. I surrendered to His voice and began preaching to the people waiting in line.

Since that day in 2003, I have continued to preach at the DMV whenever the opportunity presents itself. Over the years, I have recorded more than 67 live preaching events. Each message begins with the Gospel of John, chapter 1, verses 1–14. Although I begin with the same Scripture passage, the messages often take different directions because there is so much spiritual truth, wisdom, and revelation to glean from those verses.

As this ministry has grown and evolved, with the support and encouragement of fellow Christians, I’ve often pondered the significance of the name DMV. While most people immediately associate those three letters with the Department of Motor Vehicles, as a truck driver who has spent a significant portion of my life on the road, I began to perceive a deeper, spiritual meaning behind those letters.

DMV stands for “Driven by the Master’s Voice.”

To me, this name transcends its initial association with the place where the ministry originated. It embodies a life dedicated to the call of God, a willingness to heed His voice, and the courage to follow wherever He leads. Whether on the highway, within the walls of a church, or amidst individuals waiting in line at the DMV, the mission remains steadfast: to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ whenever and wherever God opens the door.

What began as a simple act of obedience on a Monday morning in April 2003 has transformed into a continuous testament to God’s unwavering faithfulness and the transformative power of His calling.

For when the Master speaks, we must be prepared to listen, obey, and embark on the journey He has set before us.
